The rest is case capacity and design.įundamentally, a barrel that shoots heavy-for-caliber bullets very well can present a challenge when trying to work up loads using the lightest bullets in that caliber. That accounts for roughly 200fps of the difference between these two. They are definitely apples n' oranges, but not because of the difference in barrel length. The 30 AR is meant to be a serious hunting cartridge while the 300 AAC, or Blackout, or Whisper is really designed for the sub-sonic loads. The typical amount of velocity lost per inch, in carbine and rifle-length barrels, is usually on the order of 25-35fps.
Even the 6.8SPC and 30 AR would be MUCH better options for hunting with on the AR15 platform, than the various 30 caliber rounds designed for sub-sonic loads. This gives you all sorts of options that will make the 300 AAC Blackout look truly anemic. The easiest, and perhaps wisest choice, is to go from the AR15 to the AR10. There are ways to create an AR that is powerful enough for big game hunting. (Now, the line of JDJ cartridges.THOSE are powerful!) JD did include some "oh-by-the-way" data for lighter, faster loads, but those were largely coincidental. That is its primary purpose and I doubt JD himself would suggest that it's "powerful". Now, he did stick with cartridges that would feed reliably from the standard, or slightly modified mags, but make now mistake about it: The 300 Whisper was designed, from the ground up, to be quiet. As much as anything, when JD first started playing around with the 300 Whisper, back in the 80's, he wanted a round that could be sold to the military for covert ops, where being able to shoot without a substantial report would be advantageous. They are designed to be accurate and quiet. If you go back and look at the impetus for ALL of the 30 caliber sub-sonic loads that have been created, they are not designed to be "powerful". Has anyone on the forum had experience with this cartridge or others like it, using subsonic loads? If so, would you please share your experience regarding accuracy? I just want something with a proven track record. I expect to handload, and I am not afraid of a wildcat. However, I would like to find a subsonic cartridge in about this size, for use in a suppressed bolt-action rifle, that I can be confident about the accuracy before I plunk down a bunch of money. I am not married to this specific cartridge. Consequently, I am not seeing much evidence, one way or another, about the accuracy of subsonic Blackout loads.
However, those folks do not seem to place much attention on subsonic loads. The Blackout has been very popular recently among the AR crowd, for obvious reasons. If this cannot be accomplished, then there is no point for me to have one. The only value to me is as an accurate subsonic cartridge to be used with a sound suppressor.
According to Savage, they could not find a combination of barrel length and rate of twist that would produce satisfactory accuracy for subsonic loads.
